Capcom / Nintendo It's testament to the strange release pattern of Street Fighter games that Ultra Street Fighter II comes three years after Ultra Street Fighter IV, and serves as an update to a game first released in 1991. Thank goodness Capcom's beat-'em-up franchise is best known for its frame-perfect battling rather than its storylines. Pitched as the definitive edition of the classic Street Fighter II, this features every character from the original, plus newcomers Evil Ryu and Violent Ken. Hardcore Street Fighter fans returning to the game will also find it's been rebalanced. Overall, it's based more on the mechanics of 1994's Street Fighter II Turbo, with its air combos and super gauges, although the timing on old familiar combos has been updated. By Mark Wilding Ultra also presents the action in original 4:3 aspect ratio with classic pixel sprite visuals, or upgraded high definition animated characters and backgrounds, presented in widescreeen 16:9. Purists may disagree, but this looks a treat with the contemporary approach, which conveys all the charm and tone of the arcade version in a way that's best suited to modern televisions. There's also a ton of bonus material, including a digital gallery based on the long out-of-print art book Street Fighter Artworks: Supremacy, and a music box packed with character themes and stage BGMs. Sadly though, that aforementioned 'frame-perfect battling' isn't a plaudit that can be applied to this iteration of the beloved game. While its host of updates will delight traditional fans, it's all packaged in a high-def shell that welcomes newcomers, Ultra Street Fighter II is let down by the form factor of the itself. Essentially, the physical controls of the console aren't suited to a game that, at its highest levels, requires precision input. Much of this comes down to the Joy-Con controllers. Although they're technological wonders in their own right, they're not equally suited to all games. With their tiny buttons and narrow spacing between them, pulling off the rapid, often complex combos that Street Fighter demands becomes a muddle of mixed button presses for all but those with the daintiest hands. ![]() Sadly, matters don't improve much when Ultra Street Fighter II is played on the Switch's Pro Controller, which is sold separately but offers a more conventional joypad layout. Here, input feels sloppy and unresponsive, and even though there's a proper D-Pad, pulling off the move you want feels more luck than skill. Shop Ultra Street Fighter IV PlayStation 3 at Best Buy.
